Sympathy for the Devil

“So if you meet me
Have some courtesy
Have some sympathy, and some taste
Use all your well-learned politesse
Or I’ll lay your soul to waste”

– “Sympathy For The Devil” by Rolling Stones (1968)

It seems only right that during these days of chaos and bedlam I should spare a few words for the most forgotten of folk, the Devil.

There is, after all, little for him to do these days. He’s left the keys under the doormat and taken an extended vacation to some beach down south (at least that’s where the postcard I received was franked).

It seems that with all the turmoil in the world he is no longer needed as the ‘bad-guy’ by any religion. We seem to be doing a good enough job all by ourselves. Free will and all that you see.

So, if you should happen to see the poor fellow, have some sympathy; give him a wink and a nod and tell him to keep his chin up! I’m sure we’ll run out of ideas soon enough…
